“The Federals are noisy, they’re catchy, and to put it simply, they’re easily the best British band for years.” The Daily Express
“Band to blow your mind in 2010!” Rock Sound
United in their school days by an adoration of The Stooges, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jack White, York based garage-rock quartet The Federals comprise scuzzy, fuzzed up guitars, sweeping art-rock drones and an underlying punk ethos that (rather than resulting in unpleasant audible barrages), greets listeners with snarling, yet alluringly melodic blues vocals and song writing that would make many bands their elder jealous. Fronted by the engaging, born-for-this Jim Feakes, The Federals have already had much recognition from established media with The BBC at the forefront. The band is set to play the BBC Introducing stage this month at Glastonbury Festival, have previously been awarded DJ Steve Lamacq’s ‘Record of the Week’ accolade and have an avid fan in (also BBC DJ and TV personality) Fearne Cotton, who is regularly spotted sporting a Federals t-shirt. The band also recently supported Hurts and Everything Everything on the talent exposing NME Radar tour.
Soon to be released single ‘Aint Got Nothing To Lose’ is infectiously potent (and damn exciting!) from the outset; the initial charming and life-affirming guitar chords and Kasabian-esque “Aaaaah-aaah”’s throughout provide a refreshing, contrasting foundation for Feakes’ fierce vocals and precautionary chorus (“I feel it coming! You gotta stop!”) to pierce through. The chugging rhythms and double guitar-assault theme continues onto the single’s stomping, Bside ‘Cut Loose’. The driving bass and lyrically simple yet anthemic chorus (akin to garage punk-rockers The Hives) demands the listener to move and the descending, chaotic breakdown suggests the track is to be a future favourite in a live setting.
With an infectious energy and an obvious – but justified - self-assured attitude, it’s likely that The Federals are not just simply about to pop up on the Top 40 radar but rather, cockily spit on it and then smash a fist through it. And with songs this marvellous, no one would try to stop them.
