With a treacle dipped snarl reminiscent of Debbie Harry, frontwoman of Brighton based indie electro-pop outfit Kovak has already acquired the resolute attitude and mental drive for bigger things, with the band regularly hosting their very own popular electro-dance night – ‘Club Kovak’ – with Dr Alex Patterson of electronic music group The Orb at Audio. Album opener ‘Time’s Running Out’ appropriately sets the tone with its urgent synths and swirling pop chorus, with the irresistible high-pitched ‘I’ll Be Good To You’ and latest single ‘Electric City Lights’ (with its deliciously stomping 80s vibe) following suit. Make no mistake however; Kovak are capable of much more than easily digestible electro-pop ditties; the staggered and wailing hooks of ‘Never Find Love In A Nightclub’ and introspective vocal rasps of ‘Numb’ perfectly demonstrating the darker and more pensive side of the group. The included cover of ‘Atomic’ would also seem to nod at their Blondie influence and is ridiculously fun, reviving the track just enough to make it their own yet pay flattering homage.
Kovak are already making a name for themselves overseas too with ‘My Boyfriend Is A Rockstar’ being the most requested track on Japanese Radio Show “Good Morning Garage” (the most popular morning radio show in Tokyo) last year for over a fortnight and DJ Rodney Bingenhiemer of LA’s popular radio station KROQ is a fan and a regular spinner of Kovak’s addictive noise.
‘Heroes and High Heels’ is a 40 minute slab of unpretentious frolicsome with consistently potent synths and sultry attitude and is the perfect soundtrack to stick on before a big night out on the town. Get on board!
